Extending the Life of Your Multi-Child Stroller: Cleaning and Maintenance Tips for Daycares

Multi-child strollers and buggies are an essential tool for any childcare center, allowing caregivers to transport children with ease and comfort. Keeping these strollers in top-notch condition not only ensures the safety and comfort of the children but also maximizes the stroller's lifespan, ultimately saving the daycare center valuable resources.

Here are some best practices for cleaning and maintaining multi-child strollers and buggies to extend their longevity in a daycare setting. The first step to proper stroller cleaning and maintenance is to refer to the manufacturer’s guide for care instructions.

1. Daily Cleanup
Clear Crumbs: After every use, remove crumbs, dirt, and any debris from the stroller seats, crevices, and storage compartments before placing in storage.

Spot Cleaning: Use a damp cloth to quickly wipe down the stroller, addressing any visible spills or stains.

2. Weekly Deep Clean
Vacuum: Use a handheld vacuum or upholstery attachment to remove any dust, crumbs, or dirt from crevices and folds in areas such as seats, canopies, footrests, and storage baskets.

Wipe Down: Use a damp cloth to wipe down every part of the stroller, including handles, arm bars, parking brakes, buckles, and front & back of all seats.

3. Proper Storage
Foldable Stroller Storage: When not in use, store the strollers indoors, preferably in a covered area, to protect them from the elements and prolong their lifespan. Some strollers will have a storage latch to keep it from unfolding while in storage.

Buggy Storage: Due to the construction of buggies, they are unable to fold, which may result in them being stored outside. When purchasing a buggy, it is recommended to purchase a weather cover accessory to help protect it while it is not in use.

Avoid Added Weight: Ensure strollers and buggies are not stored with additional weight or items on them, which can strain the frame, wheels, and other components.

4. Regular Maintenance Checks
Wheel Maintenance: Regularly check the wheels for dirt, pebbles, salt, and hair entanglement, which can hinder their movement. Remove any blockages and wipe off debris.

Brake Inspection: Test the brakes regularly to ensure they engage and release smoothly. Adjust and repair as needed to maintain optimal brake function.

Handlebar and Frame: Check the handlebar for proper alignment and adjust it if necessary. Inspect the frame for cracks, bends, loose screws, or other damage that may affect structural integrity. Tighten screws and bolts as necessary.

Harness Inspection: Ensure that all harness latches are working properly, that there are no tears in the belt fabric, and that the adjustable shoulder positions are fully intact.

5. Educating Staff
Training and Guidelines: Conduct regular training sessions to educate staff on the importance of proper stroller care and maintenance. Provide clear guidelines and a checklist for routine cleaning and inspections.

Reporting System: Establish a reporting system where staff can promptly flag any issues or concerns with the strollers, ensuring timely maintenance and repair.

6. Repairs and Replacement
Prompt Repairs: Address any issues or damage promptly. Delaying repairs can potentially cause further damage to the stroller.

Scheduled Replacement: Develop a scheduled stroller replacement plan based on the manufacturer's recommendations and the stroller's usage to ensure the fleet is always in optimal condition.

Adhering to these cleaning and maintenance best practices for multi-child strollers will not only extend their lifespan but also promote a safe and hygienic environment for the children in your daycare. By investing time and effort into the proper care of these essential tools, you are investing in the safety and well-being of the children, your employees, and the efficiency of your daycare operations.
